===========================
BACKGROUND ON INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST HOMOPHOBIA, TRANSPHOBIA, AND BIPHOBIA
LGBTTQ young people and their families worldwide are particularly vulnerable to human rights abuses. Violence, exclusion, bullying, are often their daily reality. As part of the Jer's Vision's mandate to promote diversity and inclusivity in our community, the goal of our event is to create a safe space where families can come and enjoy a day of socializing and family-friendly recreation regardless of gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, or family composition.
International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (IDAHTB) was created in 2004 to draw the attention of policymakers, opinion leaders, social movements, the public and the media to the violence and discrimination experienced by LGBTTQ people internationally.
In under a decade, May 17th has established itself the single most important date for LGBTTQ communities to mobilize on a worldwide scale. The Day represents an annual landmark to draw the attention of decision makers, the media, the public, opinion leaders and local authorities to the alarming situation faced by lesbian, gay, bisexuals, transgender and intersex people and all those who do not conform to majority sexual and gender norms.
May 17 is now celebrated in more than 130 countries, including 37 where same-sex acts are illegal, with 1600 events reported from 1280 organizations in 2014.
These mobilizations unite millions of people in support of the recognition of human rights for all, irrespective of sexual orientation or gender identity or expression.
The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia is not one centralized campaign; rather it is a moment that everyone can take advantage of to take action. The date of May 17th was specifically chosen to commemorate the World Health Organization’s decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder.
The International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia has received official recognition from several States, international institutions as the European Parliament, and by countless local authorities. Most United Nations agencies also mark the Day with specific events.
Arts and culture-based celebrations are very common throughout the world on International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia.
For example, Bangladeshi activists organised the music festival "Love Music Hate Homophobia" in 2013, Albanian LGBT activists have, in 2012 and 2013 been organizing an annual Bike Ride for May 17 through the streets of the capital Tirana. In 2013, the IDAHO Committee called for international actions for a Global Rainbow Flashmob to mark May 17. Activists in 100 cities, in 50 countries participated with diverse public events spanning coloured balloon releases, dance flashmobs, musical events, and performance and street art.
'Majestic Family Fun Day' represents Ottawa's arts and culture contribution to this year's May 17th celebrations and we hope you and your friends and families can join us as we celebrate cultural, gender, and family diversity on this year's International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia.
This is a grassroots community effort being local community members and this is the first community-wide event of this kind in CANADA!
